La société du spectacle organise la passivité générale en distribuant une panoplie sans cesse renouvelée de rôles – de la superstar aux figurants les plus obscurs – auxquels devront s’identifier ou qu’auront à admirer ou imiter les citoyens spectateurs dans l’exécution de leurs fonctions, que ce soit comme producteurs, consommateurs ou publicitaires des marchandises auxquelles ils sont assignés.

Au-delà de la petite manoeuvre de promotion personnelle, c’est ainsi qu’il faut comprendre tous les discours médiatiques et politiques sans aucune exception : chacun propose un masque auquel pourront et devront s’adapter, les multiples comportements contradictoires de soumission à l’ordre existant.
L’un revendiquera la multiplication des quartiers de haute sécurité, l’autre exigera qu’on repeigne démocratiquement tous les barreaux, un troisième plaidera pour le fleurissement des espaces communs, le plus audacieux négociera son rôle de contestataire radical auprès des administrateurs du système.

De sorte qu’il ne reste rien des contradictions susceptibles de troubler l’ordre spectaculaire, mais seulement la soumission réelle.

The society of the spectacle organizes general passivity by distributing a constantly renewed panoply of roles – from the superstar to the most obscure extras – with which the spectator citizens will have to identify or to admire or imitate in the execution of their functions, whether as producers, consumers or advertisers of the goods to which they are assigned.

Beyond the small maneuver of personal promotion, this is how we must understand all the media and political speeches without any exception: each one proposes a mask to which the multiple contradictory behaviors of submission to the existing order can and must adapt.
One will demand the multiplication of high-security districts, another will demand that all the bars be repainted democratically, a third will plead for the flowering of common spaces, the most audacious will negotiate his role of radical protester with the administrators of the system.

So that nothing remains of the contradictions likely to disturb the spectacular order, but only the real submission.
